7 - 12 Curriculum Policy

These recommendations are designed to help our students become more successful and achieve at a higher level and meet requirements of NCLB.

1.              Remedial math and/or reading course as a required elective for any incoming freshmen, sophomore, or junior that did not “Meet the Standards” on the state assessments.

2.              Aptitude and interest test to be given to eighth grade students for use by enrollment team for entering freshmen.

3.             Enrollment team must include student, parent, counselor, and administrator. All team members must be present in order for freshmen to enroll or for sophomores, juniors or seniors to make changes to their graduation plan.  (Site-based council recommendation and NCLB requirements for “parental involvement” this will be a way for us to meet this goal)

4.             At enrollment guidance must be given on NVHS graduation requirements, state graduation requirements, and KBOR qualified admissions and scholarship requirements.  A graduation plan should be set based on student’s plans for the future as determined by parent and student. (Site-based council recommendation and NCLB requirements for “parental involvement” this will be a way for us to meet this goal)

5.             All high school students must take a minimum of Algebra 1 or Geometry as a freshman (middle school Algebra 1 does not count for high school credit)

6.             Placement in Algebra or pre-Algebra in eighth grade will be based solely on state assessment scores in seventh grade.  Students scoring below “Exceeding Standards” must take pre-Algebra students score “Exceeding Standards” or “Exemplary” will take Algebra.

7.             In order for incoming freshmen to take a course above Algebra 1, they must score at “Exceeding Standards” or “Exemplary” on their eighth grade state assessment.

8.             Mandatory 30 minutes after-school (three days a week) for failing students until they are passing.  Transportation is the responsibility of the parent or student.  Being absent will be the only excuse for not attending (but it must be made up on Friday or following Monday).  Working is not an excuse for not attending.

a.     1 day late required 40% deduction

b.     2 days late required  60% deduction

c.     The grade for work more than two days late will be determined at the discretion of the teacher but all work must be turned in even if the student receives a zero.
