Dear Parents / Guardians,

We have now successfully completed our first set of Kansas State Assessments.  I must tell you that I am extremely pleased with the effort and time that your kids have put into this past week.  It shows great maturity and personal pride in their work when they have such a great work ethic.  None of those accomplishments would be possible without your support at home.

Did you know there was an animal race to space?

Once again next week we will be tackling a round of State Assessments.  This time the area being tested will be mathematics.  Once again, I ask that you ensure that your child gets at least 8 – 10 hours of sleep each night and a good night’s sleep.  This will help them do their personal BEST on these tests ……. Which is the ultimate goal.

Thank you to Dakota, Crysta, and the Baird family for the wonderful cakes on Wednesday.  They were very delicious.  As George Burns used to say, “You can’t help getting older, but you do not have to get old.”

Did you know …… The first animal in space was the female Samoyed husky named Laika, launched by the Soviets in 1957?

This next bit is more of an announcement rather than news ….. Dwight Vallin’s funeral will be held Saturday, February 23rd.  The services will be held at the Long Island School at 2:00 PM.  There will be seating in the gymnasium as well as the band room (with a screen and audio of the service).  Afterwards, there will be cookies and tea in the cafeteria.

Did you know …… In 1958 the US sent two mice called Laska and Benjy into space? (To spy on the dog perhaps?) :-)

The Jump Rope for Heart fund raiser will be this upcoming Thursday.  It will be held during the kids’ PE class.  If you have not been able to make a donation yet, please get a hold of one of the students.  You are able to sponsor a child for a set amount or you can sponsor them so much money for each jump.  On top of raising money for a great cause, our kids have fun staying in shape.

Did you know ……. In 1963 the French launched a cat called Feliette into space? (To get the mice maybe?) :-)

Okay …… it has been a while since I have jumped on the health band wagon ….. but here I go again.  With the uncertainty of weather from day – to – day, it is extremely important to make sure our kids are properly clothed before leaving each morning.  We are entering the start of the warm weather/cold weather scenarios.  Instead of trying to out guess it, prepare for the colder weather.  If it turns out nice, they can carry their coats.

Did you know ……. In 1969 the US launched a male chimpanzee

called Ham into space? (To catch the cat I presume.) :-)

We have been fighting coughs, runny noses, and even a few temperatures have been reported in our building.  From what I understand, it is the same in area schools as well.  Let’s fight these germs with good hand washing, blowing our noses, and covering our mouths when coughing.  If you are running a fever, stay home and do not contaminate others ……. The quicker we can get these practices into daily use, the sooner we can sleep better. :-)

Did you know ….. when they say it is a zoo out there …..

they are not kidding. :-)

We will be having a competitive fund raiser next week called Pennies for Patients.  We are asking that each student donate pennies for the Leukemia patients as they are able.  Please do not use old collectable coins or ones that are being saved for a special purpose.
