Colby Forensics Meet

Taking the Gold

by Ken Tharman

March 14, 2008

Thursday, March 13th was a big day for the Northern Valley Forensics team.  On the agenda for the day was a meet in Colby.  Students look forward to this meet for a couple of reasons.  Each year the Colby Forensics’ kids use a theme for their tournament.  This year’s theme was election 2008.  The people helping and the hallways were all decked out in red, white, and blue.  Election banners, identifying the different schools in attendance, were hanging up as well.  To say the least, there was energy in the air.

Those students making it to the meet were: Bryant Tharman, Skyler Harris, Amanda Hopkins, Hannah Hawks, Megan Cole, Christina Anderson, Kayla Field, Matt Dole, Jordan Herman, and Travis Redeker.  Maggie Burger went along to assist with judging.  Dan Field made sure that we found our way down and back safely as our second driver.  Thank you, to both of you for your help.  I would not be able to make these trips happen without the support of our staff and volunteers.

The Colby sponsors started a “stand – up comedy” competition about four years ago.  This is open to only one student per school and takes place while the teams are awaiting the tabulation room to score the final rounds of the meet.  This year, there were seven contestants, each having two minutes of stage time.  I am proud to say that Jordan Herman was the winner of this event last year …….. he returned with the writing talent of Travis Redeker and proceeded to steal the show with his comical talent.  Second year in a row ….. Way to go guys!!!!

Some of the students had their best scores so far this year.  The entire team performed exceptionally well.  Those making it to the final round of the competition and their placings were: Kayla – Serious Solo (1st place) and Matt Dole – Poetry (1st place).  Way to go NV Forensics Team !!!!!!!!! They must have been feeding on that “energy in air”.

The last week of March and the first week of April will hold our last four competitions.  If you are able to make it out, we invite you along for some great performances.  The dates are March 27th (Smith Center), March 29th (Hays), April 1st (Phillipsburg), and April 2nd (League at Western Plains).  Hope to see you there.
