Phillipsburg Forensics Meet

by Ken Tharman

April 03, 2008

NV Forensics journeys to Phillipsburg

Tuesday, April 1st ……. A day many teachers and parents dread……….  Yes, the infamous April fools jokes.  It seems that this is one of those times of the year in which kids’ creative talents really shine.  In the hour of preparation for the Phillipsburg meet, I think I had at least five different attempts by students to “trick” me.  Only problem is …… they forget that I teach sixth grade ……. And I am ready for anything. :-)

The nice thing about the Phillipsburg meet is two – fold.  First, we do not have to leave school nearly as early.  This allows the kids less make up work and less preparation for substitutes.  Secondly, it allows us a much earlier return time than the normal week day meets.

On this particular day, nine students took the road in two suburbans.  Those students and their categories were: Amanda Hopkins (Serious Solo), Hannah Hawks (Poetry & Improvised Duet Acting), Travis Redeker (Humorous Solo), Brittney Braun (Informative), Bryant Tharman (Prose), Skyler Harris (Prose), Stanton Nelson (Improvised Duet Acting & Oration), Kayla Field (Improvised Duet Acting & Serious Solo), and Bryce Bird (Oration & Extemporaneous Speaking).

Those making it to the finals and their placings were: Stanton – Oration (6th), Kayla – Serious Solo (3rd), and Hannah – Poetry (2nd).  Congratulations to all of those that participated and helped to make this a fun and exciting event.  Laryl Rous made the trip over, took some pictures, and has placed a very nice article on the www.nvhuskies.org web site.  Thanks, Laryl.

Brad Scott was kind enough to lend his time for driving one of the vehicles to Phillipsburg.  Chris Robertson volunteered J to judge for Northern Valley.  We would not be able to attend these events without the help of many people.  Thank you to those behind the scenes that I forget to mention (cooks, transportation people, janitors, secretaries, administration, school board members, substitutes, etc.).
