Stanton Nelson Wins Prestigious Piano Contest

by LARYL ROUS

April 22, 2008

Stanton Nelson, a junior at NVHS, recently won the highly prestigious Robert M. Spire piano competition.  This contest was held last Friday, the 18th, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Only 15 contestants were accepted based on their resume's and the difficulty of their programs.  These applicants came from eight different states.

Upon being selected, each contestant gave a thirty minute recital in the Strauss Performing Center for the audience and judges.  Stanton's concert included works by Mozart, Schumann, and Bartok.  He was  the third person to compete and performed early in the morning.  Stanton commented, "The other pianists were phenomenal.  Their pieces left me flabbergasted."

Awards were presented at 5:00 pm that afternoon.  Two honorable mentions were given, the second prize went to Robyn Meahl--a piano colleague of Stanton's, and the first place prize went to Stanton. He was awarded $1,000 and a scholarship to study at UNO.

Stanton studies piano with Dr. Tali Morgulis at Fort Hays State University.

Congratulations Stanton from "all the Dawgs"
