Middle School Happenings (1-8-10)

by Ken Tharman

January 09, 2010

Happy 2010!  We are beginning our second semester already.  It is hard to believe half of the year is over.  I enjoyed the long break as well most of my students.  We are back now and ready to go, I hope.  The first nine weeks of this semester will have a lot of emphasis placed on state assessments.  There is formative, practice, tests to work on preparing everyone for the actual assessments.  My reading classes, 6th thru 8th, will be taking the assessments before Spring Break.  Everyone is always happy to have these out of the way.

My students and I celebrated Christmas before our break.  Each class, one at a time, came to my home for a party.  It is convenient living only a block away from school.  The kids were great and it was so much fun sharing our home with them.  This was a way of showing them how much I enjoy teaching them and having them a part of my life.  I do have to say, our dogs and cats were happy after the last class left.  The cats came out of hiding, and the dogs got to come out of the basement.

When writing their Christmas wish lists, they were also to include a New Year’s Resolution.  Some either chose to not write one or forgot to.  I think some of the parents will appreciate these.

Thank you for reading.  Over the break, I had many kind comments about the students’ entries.  I have learned so much about this age group this year.  They have lots on their minds and this is a way to express them.  Like us, what they think or feel one day may or may not be the same the next day, or even the next hour.  We hope you continue to read Middle School Happenings this semester.  I also hope the students keep their resolutions, especially the ones about not sassing their parents. :-)
