Middle School Happenings (02 - 19 - 10)

The middle school has been very busy preparing for state assessments. The computer labs have been humming with students working on formative tests in math and reading. Therefore, I am taking over middle school happenings for this edition. The sixth graders were helping me come up with ideas, and I decided to focus on them this time.
The sixth graders have been the pioneers in our district. They do not have their own room, teacher, or even desks this year. They have been absorbed into the junior high environment. The 7th and 8th graders are quick to point out that they are NOT in the junior high yet. They do not have all the rights and privileges. The sixth graders have Mr. Tharman, Mr. Springer, and me as their teacher. They are in my room for over an hour in the morning and in the afternoon. For the most part, they look at me as their classroom teacher.
At the beginning of the year, we determined that they should do most of the things that sixth graders have normally done. For example, they go out for a recess every morning with the fifth grade as they did in the past. They celebrate Halloween and Valentine’s Day with room mothers and exchanged gifts at Christmas. I think that this group of students have adapted very well.
In the past couple of weeks the sixth graders were represented at the County Spelling Bee with Trey Hall and Camden Cox. They did a great job and we were proud of them. The students have spent time preparing for the reading state assessment reviewing such terms as idioms, similes, metaphors, hyperboles, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. If you have forgotten what those terms mean, ask a middle school student and I hope they are able to tell you. On the 12th, the class celebrated Valentine’s Day. The winners for the decorated boxes were: 1st place, Talia Lowry, 2nd place, Colten Bach, and 3rd place, Eli Lowry. Everyone had a good time at the 4th and 5th grade basketball game. This is such a great group of kids and I am looking forward to having them for another two years.
The third graders have kicked off state assessments for our district. From what I hear, the class did very well. We don’t ask for perfection, just for all to do their very best. Please encourage our students and praise their achievements. The middle school will get started March 1st. We hope to do as well as they have done in the past.
