Forensic Team Travels to Hays
February 27, 2010
Oh …. oh ….. oh……. oh…. Oh my goodness it was an early morning that greeted 13 of the Northern Valley Forensic students on Saturday, February 27th. The team consisted of Matt Dole, Gunnar Hays, Daniel Field, Tyson Callaway, Jordan Herman, Bryant Tharman, Alex Tharman, Ashley Constable, Jon Compton, Samuel Field, Kenzi Husted, Haley Graham, and Kayla Lowry. This was the largest meet we have been to this year. Sixteen schools converged on Hays High School for the Gary Goodchuck Invitational.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Irma Laurin and Launa Hopkins for continuing to bring smiles and expectations with those wonderful cookies they provide. We would like to thank those parents that are able to attend the meets and cheer our team on. You would be surprised how much difference community support makes to all activities.
Each meet, every school is required to bring a judge. Normally that means they double as a second driver for us also. I would like to thank Michelle Tharman for going along and helping us out with this task. I would also like to thank Gale Hays for being our backup.
Schools ranged from 1A to 6A in size ….. but no matter how large the student body of the schools, it comes down to the individuals on the team. At this particular meet, the category of Impromptu Acting was offered. At the state competition level, only the 5A and 6A schools have adopted to use this category. Those schools at the meet were: Jetmore, Salina Central, Ellis, Osborne, Palco, Hoxie, Trego Co., TMP, Russell, Decatur Co., Wallace Co., Weskan, Northern Valley, Victoria, Hill City, and Garden City.
Those students making it to the finals after three preliminary rounds and their placings were: Gunnar – Extemporaneous Speaking (1st place), Jordan – Humorous Solo Acting (5th place), Ashley and Alex – Improvised Duet Acting (4th place), Samuel Field – Poetry (5th place), and Matt – Prose (4th place).
Points for all participants are added each round for team sweepstakes points. The Northern Valley Forensic Team placed a solid fifth place out of all the teams. Congratulations to all the students that helped make that possible. Although we came home with no plaque, we came home with the knowledge that we impressed more than ourselves. Some of the students then traveled to Palco for the Regional play off game with Thunder Ridge. Wow …. what a day they had. TWO VICTORIES!!!!
The next meet is set for Rawlins County on Saturday, March 6th. We hope to see you there. Remember ….. If you think your life has drama ….. then you know what we are talking about. :-)
