Forensics Team attends Northern Plains League Meet (2-18-12)

by Ken Tharman

February 18, 2012

Saturday, February 18th the Northern Valley hosted the Northern Plains League tournament in Almena.  In a league meet, the hosting school is able to participate as well.  To keep things fair, each school was asked to bring four judges.

The day started off with some twists and turns that I had not planned on.  There are always teams that have an unexpected illness or something, so scratching a few kids here and there is no big deal.  What I wasn’t expecting was a bus breakdown for one of the schools.  Let me restate that, they had two separate vehicle breakdowns in route to our location.  So, not only were they going to be late, it meant we had to reschedule people judging as well.  For those students with assigned drawing and performance times, it meant shuffling those too.   Even though I stressed it out, they kids and judges were awesome about adjusting to the changes.  Thank you for your cooperation.

This is probably the only meet of the year in which the kids slept in and made it home before dark.  With schools traveling from as far away as Tescott and Lincoln, we decided to start at 9:00 AM and only went with a two-round tournament.

Those attending the meet for Northern Valley were: Dakota Hilburn, Gunnar Hays, Daniel Field, Ame Baird, Makayla Smith, Jon Compton, Matt Stutsman, Alex Tharman, Morgan Speer, and Macy Kasson.

The kids started off a little sluggish in the first round …… but when I looked over the second round results ……. all I could do was smile.  Students that made it into the finals and their placings are:

Dakota – Serious Solo Acting (4th place) and Oration (4th place), Gunnar – Prose (6th place) and Extemp (1st place), Ame – Extemp (6th place), Makayla & Alex – Improvised Duet Acting (7th place), Morgan – Oration (6th place), Daniel – Poetry (1st place), Macy - Humorous Solo Acting (6th place), and Alex – Humorous Solo Acting (2nd place).

The League champs were Lincoln.  Sylvan placed second, Wilson placed third, and Northern Valley placed a close fourth.  Way to go team!!!!! Next week we travel to Hays.  Keep practicing and polishing your scripts.  Until next time, keep your act together.
