RUNNING HUSKIES FIRST MEET

Freshman Gives Coach a Lesson

by LARYL ROUS

September 06, 2008

The Cross Country team of Kayla, Kynzie, and Stanton competed in the season's first meet at Norton.

Kayla placed third in the varsity girls division running 4K in a time of 17:30. Seniors Laura Lee Baird from Norton, and Haley Wolf from Ellis were in front of Northern Valley's sophomore.

In the junior varsity race, freshman Kynzie surprised the coach by winning the girls race with a time of 19:35, which would have placed her 14th in the varsity division and earned her a medal in that race.  Kynzie was in front of the second place runner by 1:43.  This is the second year in a row a NV freshman has earned a medal in their very first high school cross country meet.

Stanton place 11th in the junior varsity boy's race, just missing a medal in that competition; running 24:07 for 5K. (high school boys run five kilometers, or 3 miles, the girls 4 kilometers or about 2.4 miles).

Team scores were for the girls --> Norton 18, Hoxie 47, and Oberlin 64.  (Lowest score wins in cross country).  A very tight race for the boys; Trego had 42, Oberlin 46, Norton 47, and Phillipsburg 92, so only 5 points separated the top three teams.

The teams next action will be at Rock Hills in Mankato on Thursday, Sept. 11th at 4:30.  The golf course is one mile west of town and one mile north.
