Statement from Mr. Orme regarding KSHSAA COVID-19 guidelines

Participants, Parents, Coaches, and Sponsors-

As hard as it is to believe, the start of the 2020-21 school year and the Fall 2020 sports season have arrived.  Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in our country, as well as the world, we find ourselves in unprecedented times.

In anticipation of the start of school and scholastic activities, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has issued a series of activity-specific guidelines in order to provide a blueprint for proceeding in as safe a manner as possible in the age of COVID-19.

As you read through them, you will notice language like, “equipment should”…., or “we recommend…”, or “athletes and coaches will…..”.  As an activities director, I like clear and concise language and guidelines.  To me, the first two examples are recommended practices, and the other is worded more like a rule or requirement.  However, there is no KSHSAA-dictated consequence for not complying with any of the guidelines, regardless of the nomenclature used.

Several years ago at a football clinic, I once heard a coach discuss motivating his players to hit the weight room with as much effort and intensity as possible.  One of his favorite quotes was (and I’m paraphrasing), “I can’t guarantee that you win a state championship if you work hard….but I can guarantee that you won’t win one if you don’t.”

It is going to take ALL of us to make sacrifices that will best enable us to have a complete season.  There are some guidelines that might be more necessary than others, while others are very simple to follow.  A couple of examples from the volleyball guidelines:

  • “The officials stand should be cleaned after each match.”—Likely not necessary if the 1st and 2nd officials stay in place for each match, or if they carpooled while traveling to NVHS.

  • “Players and team personnel on the team bench will practice social distancing within 20’and wear masks.”—Very easy to do, with minimal effort.

To borrow from the quote above----I can’t guarantee we get a full fall sports season completed, while following the guidelines to the best of our ability and feasibility…..but I can guarantee that we won’t if we don’t.

Sincerely,

Brent Orme

Activities Director
