Coach Cole’s Comments – The NVJH football team played their first game of the season against the Grinnell Thunderhawks in Long Island. The Huskies played a hard game, but lost 70-38. NV trailed at halftime 24-8. Both teams scored three times in the third quarter, but the Thunderhawks pulled away for good outscoring the Huskies 22 – 6 in the 4th quarter. NV ran their mis-direction offense extremely well as all three backs ran hard. Owen Hammond led the team in rushing with 176 yards and 1 touchdown, followed closely by Johnel Speer with 167 yards and Gavin Thalheim with 140 yards. Gavin and Johnel each scored 2 touchdowns. The Huskies lost 4 fumbles on the night which ended potential touchdown drives. Gavin Thalheim led the defense with 12 tackles. Maverick Rogers and Johnel Speer each added 5 tackles. The Huskies will look to improve next week when they host the Golden Plains Bulldogs.
