HS Boys WKLL Games

The NVHS Boys' Basketball team placed second in the championship game of the Western Kansas Liberty League (WKLL) Tournament, falling to the Cheylin Cougars 71-66 on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Colby Community Building Gymnasium.

"The Husky boys played for the league title in Colby on Saturday, and both teams played at a championship level," Coach Sides reported.  "After a slow start, and trailing by double-digits, the Huskies caught fire behind the arch with Loya hitting three and Sides with one - to be within one after the first quarter."

" The second quarter was all Huskies hitting six more treys and leading 44-34; {even though} the Huskies came out flat they relinquished their lead and trailed by three heading into the final period.  It was a tie ballgame with 2.0 seconds on the clock, a Cougar {player} threw up a shot that banked in; and with a couple free-throws, the game ended 71-66."

Bailey Sides led scoring for the Huskies against Cheylin with 16 points, followed by Eric Loya,15; Kenton Thalheim, 11; Colton Bailey, 10; Jeremiah Hansen, 6; Foster Brands, 6; Drew Schemper, 2.

Leading up to the WKLL Championship matchup against Cheylin, the NVHS boys defeated Logan/Palco 59-51 (the teams' third matchup in basketball play, for this season) in Grainfield in WKLL Tourney, bracket play on Thursday, Feb. 4.

Tharen Cox led scoring for the Huskies with 14; Kenton Thalheim, 10; Colton Bailey, 11; Eric Loya, 6; Foster Brands, 6; Bailey Sides, 5; Jeremiah Hansen, 5; Drew Schemper, 2.

On Tuesday, Feb. 2 the Huskies defeated Triplains-Brewster 70-46 in Grainfield, during first bracket-play of the WKLL Tournament to advance.

"The Huskies jumped out to a 27-10 first quarter and cruised to a 70-46 victory over Triplains-Brewster Titans" Head Coach Kevin Sides said. "The Huskies used their full-court pressure to cause many turnovers - which led to transition buckets.  Once again, nine players scored, led by Brands, Loya, Tharen Cox, and Hansen - who all had double-digits.  The boys have worked extremely hard all year and it's starting to show in the win column."

Scoring for the Huskies against the Titans were: Foster Brands, 15; Eric Loya, 12; Tharen Cox, 12; Jeremiah Hansen, 10; Kenton Thalheim, 7; Bailey Sides, 6; Colton Bailey, 4; Drew Schemper, 2; Clay Preston, 2.
