The junior Lady Huskies have not broken their losing streak yet but continue to improve. Our defensive awareness and hustle continue to get better. Offensively we are penetrating the lane more but shots just aren’t falling. Annika McKinney led in rebounds with 9 followed by Inez Schemper with 7. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls took this week’s goal of driving to the lane to heart and worked hard at taking good shots. They were willing to try something new by pushing the ball and it paid off for them. Avriegh McCue led the team in scoring with 4 points, 8 out of the 9 girls got at least one rebound and Rowan Bremer led with 3 blocks.

Golden Plains at Rexford December 16, 2024 NV A-Team Girls (0 - 6) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley 0 1 4 6 Golden Plains 11 13 20 22 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 4 Annika McKinney – 1 Inez Schemper – 1 NV B-Team Girls (2 - 2) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley - - 4 6 Golden Plains - - 2 5 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 2 Cambrie Sproul – 2 Avreigh McCue – 2 Coach Lowry’s Comments – The Northern Valley Junior High girls traveled to Rexford, KS to take on the Golden Plains Bulldogs. We have not broken our losing streak yet, but we continue to see improvements elsewhere. With 37 shot opportunities and 22 rebounds we could not get the shots to fall in, but defensively we had better position and maintained more control. Offensively we moved the ball better and our hustle back has improved. We will continue to work on scoring. Ryelyn Cox led the team with 4 points and Annika McKinney led with 8 rebounds. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls stepped up their game on defense and were willing to take more shots earning them their second win of the season. I appreciated their hustle and it was fun to watch them earn a win in overtime. Three girls contributed to the scoring and Rowan Bremer led with rebounds.

B Team The Northern Valley JH Huskies B Team defeated Golden Plains 4-0 in 2 quarters on Monday night in Rexford. The game was tied at zero after the 1st quarter before the Huskies pulled out the victory in the second quarter. Colton Ledbetter and Victor Alvarez-Santos led Northern Valley JH Huskies B in scoring with two points each. Ledbetter also secured 3 steals in the game. A Team The Northern Valley JH Huskies A Team loses to Golden Plains 10-40. Aaron Horacek and Colt Rogers led Northern Valley in scoring with four points each. Bryson Wilder also contributed in scoring for the Huskies scoring two points. Cash Compton led the Huskies in rebounding with 5, and also led the team with 2 assists. Comments from Coach Boehler: It was fun to see the B team get their first win of the season. They played solid team defense, and Colton Ledbetter was tenacious with 3 steals and even forced a 10 second violation by himself at one point. The A team didn't have a great night. We seemed to forget some of the principles of our zone defense, and we still need to improve quite a bit at taking care of the ball to give ourselves a chance. We don't play again for a few weeks so we will use this break as a time to re-evaluate and maybe try some new options.

Hey all!! Here is the information letter for the last week of 1st semester!! There are still a ton of things happening this week!! It is our privilege to honor and recognize the Back-to-Back State Cheer Champions at Friday night's HS BB game against Weskan!! Bring your family out and celebrate the Cheer Squad!! Have an amazing Christmas Break!!! We will see you back on Jan. 2nd.

NVJH Boys Basketball vs Thunder Ridge 12-12-24 The Northern Valley Boys took on the Thunder Ridge Longhorns on December 12th with a full 4 quarter B game and as well as the A game. The Huskies played by far their best games in both contests, however, were unable to secure their first victories of the season. The Huskies fell in the B game 23-27. The Huskies utilized a 2-3 zone to try and keep the much larger Longhorns out of the paint and did the best they have all year with shifting in the zone and preventing easy baskets. On the offensive side, Colt Rogers led the way with 12 points in his 2 quarters of action. Several other Huskies scored in the game and showed growth in passing, cutting, and operating the offense. Cruz Van Patten had 4 points, Colton Ledbetter, Victor Alvarez-Santos, and Jaden Johns all had 2 points apiece and Westyn Lowry had one point. In the A game, the Huskies again faced a much taller team in the Longhorns, outside of the Huskies’ Aaron Horacek. The Huskies attempted to isolate Horacek in one-on-one matchups down low and did a great job of getting the ball inside rather than force up contested shots. It was a great sign of growth to take the matchup and force the Longhorns to collapse onto the 6’3” post opening other players. Unfortunately, the Huskies struggled shooting from all ranges on the court despite getting good looks. The Huskies did play by far the best defense of the year in a 2-3 zone against the lengthy Longhorns. While the Huskies would lose the contest 14-29, it was by far the best the team has looked in terms of defense, patience with the offense, smart passing, and taking the right matchups as they presented themselves. Bryson Wilder led the Huskies with 8 points followed by Aaron Horacek with 4 and Colt Rogers with 2 points. The A-team girls had a couple of good quarters outscoring the Lady Longhorns but didn’t quite put a whole game together to get the win. We picked up our defense in the second half but are still working to move the ball offensively in an effort to find better shots. Ryelyn Cox led the team with 6 points. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls took advantage of open spots and were willing to look to the basket to score. They were more aggressive with the ball and getting rebounds. It was great to see them put some skills together last night for their first win of the season.

It was a day of learning and pushing out of our comfort zone. The first game of the day against the Western Plains Lady Bobcats was a competitive game where our girls had to step up. In the second half we got more aggressive at attacking the basket. We struggled to break their press and make our free throws but found opportunities for five players to score. In the second game of the day against Triplains/Brewster we struggled defensively to contain their corner shots. Annika McKinney had a good game with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The girls have been working hard in practice and found more opportunities to drive to the basket this week. We still struggle with rebounding and keeping our intensity the entire game but there is a lot of potential in this group. Annika McKinney led the team with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls struggled to find a groove last night against the aggressive Trojans. We will keep working through these challenges to grow as a team. Ryelyn Cox led the team scoring three points.

A Game The Northern Valley JH Huskies A team couldn't keep up with Logan/Palco, 42-4, on Thursday 12/5 in Logan. Logan/Palco went on a 25-point run to start the game and never looked back. Aaron Horacek and Max Wilder had the lone points for Northern Valley in the game. Colt Rogers led the Huskies in rebounds for the 2nd straight game with 6. B Game The Northern Valley JH Huskies B team also lost to Logan/Palco, 30-10, on Thursday. A rough 1st quarter from the Huskies was too tough to come back from. Asher Van Patten and Cruz Van Patten each scored four points to lead the Huskies. Colton Ledbetter had a busy game, leading the Huskies with 10 rebounds and also adding 5 steals. Additional scorers for Northern Valley included Victor Alvarez-Santos (2 points) and Westyn Lowry (2 points). Comments from Coach Boehler The A and B teams both got off to rough starts. It will definitely be a goal in the coming weeks to get off to better starts. I was encouraged by the remaining 3 quarters from the B team, because if you take away that awful first quarter we only lose by a few points. There were positives in the B game and it is good to see some of them start to get a little more comfortable on the court. For the A team, we just hurt ourselves with turnovers again. We have to start being better at seeing the floor and making smart, accurate passes. If we want to find some success we have to pass better in our press break and in our half court offense. On a positive note, even though the stat sheet didn't show it Cash Compton played a great game. He played the entire game and showed great hustle, effort, and defense for 4 quarters.

The Northern Valley JH Huskies traveled to Healy, KS for an A team tournament on Saturday. Game 1 vs Western Plains In the first round of play, the Huskies fell to Western Plains 20-31. The game was tied at 12 when Western Plains went on a 19-point run to take a commanding lead. Aaron Horacek led the Huskies in both scoring and rebounding with eight points and 11 rebounds. Other scoring contributors for Northern Valley included Bryson Wilder (6 points), Colt Rogers (3 points), Max Wilder (2 points), and Colton Ledbetter (1 point). Game 1 comments from Coach Boehler This was a frustrating loss because I felt that we were in control for the majority of the game. Western Plains put a full court press on us in the 2nd half and we could not execute our press break against it. That's when they went on their big run and it was too tough for us to come back from. We have been practicing different press breaks for weeks but that was the first time the boys had seen a full court press this season, and probably ever for most of them. I am hoping that we learn from the experience. We also went 2-16 from the free throw line, and you are probably never going to win shooting that low of a percentage on free throws. Game 2 vs Tri-Plains/Brewster Northern Valley lost to Tri-Plains/Brewster 14-33 in the 3rd/4th place game Saturday afternoon. Aaron Horacek led the team in scoring and rebounding with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Bryson Wilder (2 points) and Colt Rogers (2 points) helped out Northern Valley JH Huskies A as well. Game 2 comments from Coach Boehler We got off to a bad start which has been the story in 3 of our first 4 games this year. One of our goals moving forward in the coming weeks is going to be to execute well for 4 quarters, we can't put ourselves in a hole early on and we can't have the big runs or big quarters that have hurt us at times. Cash Compton had another great game full of hustle and effort. Aaron Horacek led the offense for us with his inside scoring and I thought that Colt Rogers made some great passes, especially in the 2nd half once he got a feel for how to attack their defense. The results have not been there, but I am proud of the effort I am seeing from the boys. Even when things are not going well they are always giving great effort on the court. We are all going to keep working hard to try and get better and find some success.

Here is the weekly agenda for the week of 12.2.24. We are starting the last 3 weeks of the first semester! We start the high school winter sports season this week and have a Junior High BB Tournament on Saturday. This is an A team tournament and more information will be posted later. Sunday is also the Old Fashioned Christmas hosted by the HS STUCCO. Have a great week!!

A Game Northern Valley JH Huskies A couldn't keep up with Wheatland/Grinnell, losing 42-8. Aaron Horacek led Northern Valley JH Huskies A in scoring with four points. Colt Rogers pounded the glass, collecting eight rebounds to lead Northern Valley. Additional scorers for Northern Valley included Bryson Wilder (2 points) and Colt Rogers (2 points).B Game The NVJH Boys lost to Grinnell/Wheatland 37-6. Grinnell/Wheatland went on a 14-point run to start the game and never looked back. The Huskies B team also struggled with taking care of the ball. Jaden Johns led Northern Valley in scoring with four points. Colton Ledbetter also contributed for Northern Valley JH Huskies scoring two points. Comments from coach Max Boehler I think for a lot of our B team players it was their first time playing organized basketball, so there were a lot of nerves. Hopefully now they have some butterflies out and the game can slow down a little bit for them and play more under control. As for the A team, they have to take care of the ball better. We made a lot of bad passes and had way too many turnovers for us to have any chance. We'll need to improve our decision making and our transition defense also needs a lot of improvement. Fortunately for us we have a handful of practices before our next game.
