Northern Valley Middle School Girls Track The Northern Valley Middle School girls opened their 2025 track season on a beautiful spring day in Norton, KS. The weather was just about perfect for these young athletes to compete against 10 different schools. This is one of our larger track meets where the kids get a lot of exposure to different events and competition. We have two 8th grade girls this year. Brielle Britton scored our only point placing 6th in the long jump. In the 7th grade division, we had a total of 22 points. Sixth grader Ryelyn Cox tied for second place in pole vault and Cambrie Sproul had her personal best in high jump placing third with a jump of 4’0”. Coach Lewis is asking for your help! He is working on building stat records for the NV High School Girls Basketball team but is missing many years' worth of data. If anyone has stat reports (maybe handed out at awards banquet) and would be willing to send or bring a copy to the school, it would be appreciated. Please do not put any stats in the comments we are asking for a physical copy only. Thanks in advance. Go Huskies. 💚🏀

A Team WKLL Tournament The Junior Huskies boys A team fell, 14-26, to Heartland Christian on Friday in the WKLL tournament. Colt Rogers was the leading scorer for the Huskies A with six points. Aaron Horacek collected seven boards to lead Northern Valley on the glass. Also contributing in scoring for the Huskies were Bryson Wilder (4 points) and Aaron Horacek (4 points). A team final season record: 1-11 B Team WKLL Tournament Game 1 The Northern Valley JH Huskies B team fell To Grinnell/Wheatland 17-50 in the first round of the WKLL Tournament on Saturday. Cruz Van Patten led the Huskies in scoring with seven points. Asher Van Patten led the team with five blocks. Jaden Johns collected eight boards to lead Northern Valley on the glass. Jaden Johns (6 points), Asher Van Patten (2 points), and Victor Alvarez-Santos (2 points) all contributed in scoring as well. B Team WKLL Tournament Game 2 The Huskies B team fell, 7-14, to Logan/Palco on Saturday in the 3rd-4th place game of the WKLL Tournament. Westyn Lowry scored four points to lead the Huskies. Jaden Johns led the team on the boards with eight rebounds. Cruz Van Patten added 6 steals for the Huskies. Additional scorers for Northern Valley included Jaden Johns (2 points) and Cruz Van Patten (1 point). B team final season record: 2-9 Comments from Coach Boehler: In the A team tournament on Friday, we had a hard time making shots. We ran our offense relatively well and found decent looks most of the time, just were unable to shoot a good percentage. We started in a zone defense because I wanted to stay out of foul trouble with only having 6 players, and the Crusaders were able to make some outside shots. We switched to man defense later in the game and were able to force a few turnovers but in the end it was not enough. The B team played two games on Saturday against Wheatland/Grinnell and Logan/Palco. We played with only 5 players on Saturday, so that was a challenge for us. Against Wheatland/Grinnell we started very slow, turning the ball over too much and not matching the other team's intensity level. Playing a morning game after an almost 2 hour trip to get to Brewster was probably a factor in that one. In game 2 against Logan/Paco we played defense very well for most of the game, we just could not make shots and struggled to rebound at times. We started to press late in the game and started forcing turnovers, but still struggled to create offense. Despite not having a lot of success this season, I am proud of this group of boys because the effort was usually great and we refused to give in and check out despite a lot of losses. They have all become better basketball players and I have definitely grown as a coach.

Northern Valley Middle School Girls Basketball Western KS Liberty League Tournament Vs. Heartland Christian at the Colby Event Center February 13.,2025 NV A-Team Girls (1 – 11) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley 2 4 7 10 Heartland Christian 4 13 17 24 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 2 Cambrie Sproul – 4 Kaylee Miller – 4 Coach Lowry’s Comments – The A-team girls were excited to start their WKLL Tournament at the Colby Event Center. We had the play-in game against the Heartland Christian Crusaders losing 10-24. We were not able to match the intensity of our opponent, and we struggled to shut down their best player. This was not the ending we had hoped for, and the girls know there are things they could have done better. Cambrie Sproul and Kaylee Miller led the team with four points each and Annika McKinney led in rebounds with 6. Overall, we ended the season with a 1-11 record. This was a young team that came to practice every day with the attitude of getting better but struggled to implement numerous things on the court. We are only losing one eighth grader next year so we will play with many of the same girls. I am excited to see this group grow as a team and anticipate more success next year.

B Game The Northern Valley JH Huskies B team played 2 quarters vs Cheylin on Thursday in McDonald, KS and lost 7-21. Westyn Lowry led the Huskies in scoring with 4 points. Max Wilder (2 points) and Cruz Van Patten (1 point) also contributed in scoring for Northern Valley. Max Wilder added 4 steals in the contest. The B team is now 2-7 on the season and is scheduled to face Grinnell/Wheatland in the WKLL B team tournament 2/15 at Brewster Public Schools at 10 AM. A Game The Northern Valley JH Huskies A team couldn't keep up with Cheylin, 20-48, on Thursday in McDonald, KS. Aaron Horacek led the team in scoring and rebounding with 10 points and 7 boards. Additional scorers for the Huskies included Bryson Wilder (4 points), Colt Rogers (4 points), Asher Van Patten (1 point), and Levi Black (1 point). Max Wilder had 3 assists. The A team is now 1-10 and is scheduled to face Heartland Christian in the WKLL A team tournament 2/13 at 10 AM at the Colby, KS Event Center. Comments from Coach Boehler: The B team was outrebounded and struggled to take care of the ball in this one. Most of the points allowed were due to allowing offensive rebounds. We will have to show better effort in boxing out if we want to give ourselves a chance at making a run in the WKLL tournament this weekend. One positive it that they were able to shoot at least 50% from the free throw line in this one. That was a goal that we have been working toward, and will need to continue to get better in that area. The A team game was similar in that we gave up 20 offensive rebounds, leading to the bulk of Cheylin's scoring opportunities. This was upsetting because I believe that rebounding is mostly effort, and effort is not usually an issue with this group of boys. We also had our 2 best ball handlers get in foul trouble early on, which led to a ton of turnovers. That is when Cheylin started to pull away. We will hope to have our best week of practice yet, and strive to play our best basketball all season this weekend at the WKLL tournament.

B Game The Northern Valley Boys B team fell 11-20 to Tri-Plains/Brewster in a 2 quarter contest on Thursday in Almena. Colton Ledbetter was the leading scorer for Northern Valley JH Huskies B with 5 points. Westyn Lowry was the leading rebounder with 4, and Asher Van Patten recorded 2 blocks in the game. Jaden Johns (2 points), Asher Van Patten (2 points), and Victor Alvarez-Santos (2 points) also contributed in scoring for the Huskies. The B team is now 2-6 on the season. A Game The Northern Valley Boys A team fell 16-27, to Tri-Plains/Brewster on Thursday in Almena. Aaron Horacek was the leading scorer for Northern Valley with eight points. Horacek also led the team in rebounding with 11 and added 4 blocks in the game. Bryson Wilder and Colt Rogers each had 2 steals and were the only other scoring contributors for the Huskies, each with 4 points. The A team is now 1-9 on the season. Next up for the Junior Huskies will be Cheylin on Thursday in Mcdonald, KS. Comments from Coach Boehler: The B team was overmatched in size in this one. We gave up a ton of offensive rebounds which was the main reason we lost. They are getting much better at reading defenses and making smart choices with their passes and shot selection. We will continue to work on boxing out so we can have a better chance against bigger opponents in the future. The A team learned a new defense this week and had barely any time to practice it, but they executed it relatively well and I was pleased with that. Their hustle and effort was great, especially on defense and it was what gave us a chance. We struggled to execute on offense though, and weren't able to come up with enough points to get the win. I am also still frustrated with our inability to make free throws, as we went 0-6 in this one. We are looking forward to one more regular season game this week to see if we can keep trending upward before our league tournament in 2 weeks.

Northern Valley Middle School Girls Basketball Vs. Triplains/Brewster at Almena January 30, 2025 NV A-Team Girls (1 - 9) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley 0 5 11 14 Triplains/Brewster 11 22 33 38 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 7 Rowan Bremer – 1 Annika McKinney – 4 Inez Schemper – 2 NV B-Team Girls (3 - 4) 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr Final Score Northern Valley - 0 6 8 Triplains/Brewster - 6 11 15 Scoring Ryelyn Cox – 1 Cambrie Sproul – 2 Avreigh McCue – 1 Annika McKinney – 4 Coach Lowry’s Comments – The Northern Valley Junior High hosted Triplains/Brewster for their final home game of the season. This was an aggressive, fast paced game and our girls struggled to find the confidence to play to their potential. Turnovers were a struggle but the girls continued to work hard to move the ball offensively and rebound. Ryelyn Cox led the team with 7 points. Assistant Coach McKinney’s Comments – The B-team girls were a little slow to get with the action tonight. In the first quarter we were not rebounding or looking for opportunities to score. This improved throughout the game but the girls couldn’t come back from the 0-6 start. Annika McKinney led the team with 4 points and 8 rebounds.
