Coach Cole’s Comments;
The Husky boys played two great games on Thursday night in Colby for their second week of summer league. We ran our new motion offense well getting lots of touches in the paint which led to high percentage shots. The ball is not sticking on offense, and we are also getting open shots on the perimeter.
Hoxie gave us fits on the offensive glass. 4 out of the 5 of their players were taller than 6’ 2”, and we had trouble with that. It was a two point game at half, and one of their players hit multiple threes to extend their lead. We would only have 4 turnovers in the game.
Oberlin was a great game for us. The lead went back and forth the whole game, we got great looks at the rim, Griffin would go 6 for 6 in the first half, and we did a decent job playing our 1-3-1 defense. Oberlin would hit multiple three pointers to extend their lead as well, as they put it out of reach. It was a very physical game that got out of hand, and I was proud of how our guys kept a level head. All the boys are happy we have had close games so far in summer league. We won’t have any trouble competing against WKLL teams next year.
Next week is our last week, as we play Goodland and Colby, at 7:15 pm and 8:45 pm.

Coach Cole’s Comments;
The Husky boys gained some experience on Thursday night (without Tait Thalheim) playing at the Colby Event
Center. The first game came against Dundy County, NE, where we took a 35 - 52 loss, but were ahead at half time. The
Tigers would hit multiple three pointers in the second half to widen the point spread. We did a nice job of running
offense and not turning the ball over in the half court. Griffin and Lucas would end with 14 and 12 points. Griffin led
with 12 rebounds.
The second game against Cheylin resulted in a WIN! It was not a pretty win, but Lucas would make a layup to go up 1
with 10 seconds and the Cougars would miss the buzzer beating shot. The Huskies saw a 1-3-1 full court press, with
man in the half court. We did a better job putting pressure on the rim and not settling for threes. We rebounded the
ball well, not letting Cheylin have many second chance opportunities. We had many poor decisions leading to
turnovers, but we are figuring things out. The Huskies ran a 1-3-1 defense in both games, and ran Motion offense
looking for our bigs inside. Next week we face Hoxie and Oberlin at 6:30 and 8:00

Three Northern Valley Boys headed down to Wichita last weekend to compete in the KSHSAA 1A State Championship. Seniors Gavin Thalheim (Javelin), Owen Hammond (High Jump and 110M Hurdles), and Sophomore Tait Thalheim (Pole Vault).
State Results:
110M Hurdles - Owen Hammond, 8th
"To say I am proud of these boys is an understatement. Fighting through injuries and disappointments they still gave it their all. Track is a sport that demands dedication every day and though the results are not always what was wanted the journey and growth over the years is unforgettable. As always, Northern Valley had quite the fan section making the trip which is always nice to see. As we close out our season I wish all of the seniors good luck in the future." Coach Hansen.

Last week the FFA Chapter took 6 kids to State FFA Convention in Manhattan and we had a blast. From watching sessions to skipping down the sidewalk. There was lots of bounding and laughs, we can not wait to see what this year has to offer and all the laughs that are to come!

Conner David took on the 1A State Championships at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson on May 26th and 27th.
Conner traveled with Coach Mitch Pugh and his parents on May 25th. Coach Pugh, Conner, and his dad were able to play a practice round and get a feel for the course. It's always one of the most fun parts of the season seeing all the competitors and the atmosphere of State Golf.
Conner teed off at 9:00 am on the 26th. Day one started off with a lot of nerves and took a few holes to get settled in. Conner then went on to get dialed in and shoot very well for the rest of the day. He had some great long putts and was able to chip on multiple times with good accuracy. He had eight pars and two birdies on the day that built a lot of confidence. Conner ended the first day with a 44 on the front and 39 on the back nine for an 83. The cut line for making day 2 ended up being 88.
His second day started with a 10:20 tee time. After starting with a double bogey, he took par on the next two holes and looked dialed in. Unfortunately, the greens played much differently and putting was a struggle the whole day. Conner spent most of the day playing bogey golf- going one or two over par for most of the remaining holes. He ended his second day with 5 pars but couldn't get the momentum like he had the first day. He shot a 44 on the front 9 and 46 on the back 9, for a 90.
With an overall score for the two days of a 173, he ended up in 30th place. The competition medal line for this year was a 166 for 20th place. Gavin Wahl from South Gray shot a +1 for his third consecutive individual championship. The Hill City Ringnecks won the team championship- their first since 1998. Congratulations to all the medalists. There were some very good high school golfers in the ccompetition, and it's always fun to see how we match up with the rest of the state.
For Conner, it's onto next season for his upcoming Senior year where he should make some noise with the best of 1A and build on a very rewarding experience. It was a great season of golf and look forward to next year!

The Husky Golf team headed out to Sharon Springs for a Sub-State competition. Four total Huskies competed on the day, after leaving Almena at 5:30 am the day after graduation. The team looked a little different from meets earlier in the year for various different reasons, but there was a good chance to gain experience by those able to compete. The weather did not cooperate, and it was overcast and misting/sprinkling all day.
Gavin Thalheim finished with a 98 to finish with a 31st place finish. Tait Thalheim finished with a 106 for 41st place. Malikiah Hitt finished in 48th place with a 138.
Our best finisher was Conner David. He finished with an 82 good for 6th place and the chance to go to 1A State Golf in McPherson!
Conner will go down with Coach Pugh on May 25th for a practice round before starting competition on May 26th at Turkey Creek Golf Course.

Bryson Wilder shot his career best round of golf and has continued to improve. Malikiah Hitt has improved each meet in his time limited by participating in track as well. Jaden Johns and Kylee Ledbetter tied for the second time on the year, with Jaden winning both tiebreakers.

The team has continued to work all season, and the little things are starting to click. There have been big improvements in our short season, from having very limited experience in late March to starting to make contact with the ball, understanding the rules and etiquette, and gaining confidence. I hope this group continues to stick with it over the summer and comes back even better next season. -Coach Pugh
Looking forward: Final regular season varsity meet in Phillipsburg for the Mel Schremmer Tournament on May 12th.

As the school year draws to a close, the Northern Valley FFA Chapter would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who supported us throughout the year.
We were pleased to host a successful banquet on April 25, during which we recognized members who excelled in competitions and celebrated their achievements. In addition, we proudly installed our 2026–2027 officer team: Trista Smith, President; Lucas Hansen, Vice President; Jordy Cox, Secretary; Griffin McKinney, Treasurer; Haedyn Cox, Reporter; Maddie Wilder, Sentinel; and Aaron Horacek, Historian.
We look forward to another outstanding year ahead.
