TREGO POWERLIFTING INVITATIONAL - 2025 The Northern Valley Huskies powerlifters competed in their second meet of the season in Wakeeney, KS, on March 8. The team consisted of two juniors; Owen Hammond, Maverick Rogers, and two freshmen; Lucas Hansen, and Andrea Meraz. Plus myself, Ross Cole, and team manager Landry Gebhard. There was a total of 69 girl lifters, and 184 boy lifters, that makes a total of 253 athletes. It was packed!! Other than the Bench, Squat, Clean, and Overall records that the Trego powerlifting meet took, they also kept RATIO. Which calculates how much weight you lift divided by your body weight. Owen Hammond ranked 59th out of 184 boys in ratio, as he lifted 4.268 times his body weight! Lucas Hansen came in 93rd with 3.818 times his body weight, and Maverick Rogers in 125th as he lifted 3.402 times his body weight. Owen Hammond got a personal record in the bench, as he pressed 190 pounds. Maverick Rogers made a 20-pound improvement on his hang clean as he lifted 125 pounds for a personal record. He also bench pressed 105 lbs for personal best, but the lift didn’t count because of foot movement. Andrea Meraz tied her personal best with a 100-pound hang clean. Lucas Hansen had a great day, matching his personal best in the bench and clean. Lucas did not fail a lift all day, which means he has room for improvement! On a side note, Trevor and Gary Hammond became the first Northern Valley Powerlifting spectators as they came to watch the athletes compete! I was very happy with the Husky athletes that showed up and came to compete at Wakeeney on Saturday. These athletes have all worked hard in the weight room improving their strength, technique, and attitude towards lifting. There are currently 28 students in high school P.E. classes, but powerlifting isn’t a very popular sport to attend yet, so I am pleased with the students that do attend. BOYS - Bench, Squat, Clean - Overall Owen Hammond (165 weight class) 190 lbs, 315 lbs (5th), 195 lbs - 700 lbs Maverick Rogers (123 weight class) 95 lbs, 195 lbs (5th), 125 lbs (6th) - 415 lbs (5th) Lucas Hansen (148 weight class) 160 lbs, 255 lbs, 155 lbs - 565 lbs Andrea Meraz (140 weight class) 90 lbs, 0 lbs, 100 lbs - 190 lbs BOYS TEAM RESULTS 1. Coach Lewis is asking for your help! He is working on building stat records for the NV High School Girls Basketball team but is missing many years' worth of data. If anyone has stat reports (maybe handed out at awards banquet) and would be willing to send or bring a copy to the school, it would be appreciated. Please do not put any stats in the comments we are asking for a physical copy only. Thanks in advance. Go Huskies. 💚🏀

Hey Huskies!! Here is our Weekly Agenda. The weather is looking unpredictable so stay flexible again this week. If there are any changes we will make sure to send a text caster out and get a post made on the school website. Let us know if you have any questions! Right now the Foreign exchange student meeting is in the HS Auditorium, but if they need a projector for a presentation we will move that to an appropriate classroom. Thanks!

Northern Valley vs Wheatland/Grinnell - January 17, 2025 Coach Cole; JUNIOR VARSITY - The Husky pups faced the Thunderhawks in a 3-Quarter junior varsity game and it was a nail biter the entire 24 minutes of action. The JV would start out in full court man pressure once again, forcing a few steals in the opening quarter. Tait Thalheim would score 10 of the 12 in the first quarter, as Ayden Keith would put in his first basket of the season. The first quarter score was 12 - 16 in favor of Wheatland. In the second, the Huskies would put up a 16 point quarter of their own as Lucas Hansen ran the point and distribute the ball to multiple Huskies. Griffin McKinney led with 6, Zane Brown with 5, Lucas Hansen with 3, and Caden Lowry with 2. The Huskies would lead 28 - 25. In the final quarter, the Thunderhawks would continue to play man to man, and the Huskies would switch back from man to zone. It was a grudge match the last quarter as the Huskies would dive for loose balls and be on the receiving end of many foul calls. The Huskies would find themselves down by 1 with 30 seconds left, Lucas and Griffin set up the pick and roll, as Griffin would make a nice jump shot off of the assists from Lucas and put the Huskies up by 1 with 12 seconds left. In the final possession from Wheatland, #12 Goetz would fire a 3-Pointer, miss it, get his own rebound, and put it back in to score. The Huskies would get a final shot attempt off from Tait Thalheim, but it would be long, and the Huskies JV would lose by 1 point. 33 - 34. All the JV team needed was a rebound to win, and they came up short. VARSITY - The Huskies varsity team would come out with an intensity I hadn’t seen since the first game we had vs Tri-Plains/Brewster. We would end up scoring 18 in the first quarter, but that would be the end of our hot spell. The Huskies would let the Thunderhawks go on a run of their own for more than 15 minutes of play. The game was within 9 points for a long time, but we could not run offense and get good shots. The final score was 37 - 48. The Huskies would shoot 12/55 from the field. This is a game that I personally wanted to win very badly. My team understands my passion for winning and I hold them to a high standard, because I know they can handle being pushed past their limitations. They have to understand that all five players on the court contribute to winning, and all five players produce in different ways. We will get better. Tait Thalheim led in scoring with 15 points. Griffin McKinney led in rebounds with 13.

Northern Valley vs Oberlin Red Devils - January 14, 2025 Coach Cole; JUNIOR VARSITY - The Husky JV team shot tremendously during the first quarter of a two quarter game last Tuesday, as the team put up 20 points. Led by Tait Thalheim’s 11. The Husky junior varsity put on a full court press with pressure defense and ran the floor well on offense. They also ran Flex well as we hit Lucas Hansen on a flex cut for a score. The score was 20 - 8 at the end of one, as the Huskies put the game out of reach from Oberlin. The final score was 29 - 21 as the Red Devils made a comeback, but the Husky Pups would close the game strong. VARSITY - The Huskies varsity team would have to overcome inconsistent officiating, as the Huskies totaled 21 fouls and the Red Devils 22 fouls in the game, as lots of players had to sit on the bench and watch the action. The Huskies would once again have shooting woes, going 17/53 from the field and getting scoring from Hammond and T. Thalheim. Oberlin would shoot 45% as most of their buckets would come inside. The Huskies put up a fight and would score 49 points, which is more than usual. Our half court man to man defense is looking better, but still needs repetition. Tait Thalheim would score 29 points in the contest going 8/13 from the FT line, 3/8 from Three-Point, and 6/16 from Two-Point. This is the most points scored by a freshman in Northern Valley history. Most freshmen dream of getting 24 shot attempts and 13 free throw attempts, but this is needed from Tait under the circumstances of Gavin Thalheim’s injury. Shooting confidence is needed from the other Huskies role players… they will get more comfortable eventually.

Northern Valley vs Hill City Ringnecks - January 13, 2025 Coach Cole; JUNIOR VARSITY - The Huskies JV team had their roughest game of the season yesterday as the team totaled 13 personal fouls, Hill City had 21 personal fouls. Hill City annihilated the young Huskies on rebounding, and that’s how they won the game, on second chance points. In the second half, NV would run a 2-3 zone defense and give the Ringnecks fits as we would make a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter getting within 7 points, but couldn’t keep it going. Tait Thalheim led the JV in scoring with 13, Zane Brown with 7, Griffin McKinney with 6, and Conner David with 4. The Ringnecks would win 42 - 30. VARSITY - The Huskies varsity struggled from the beginning as we could not break the press. Hill City collapsed on our middle man, and were quick enough to get a strong trap on us as soon as we passed half court. Owen Hammond was able to get through the press 1 on 1 a few times and drew three blocking fouls. But the Husky freshmen starters could not make good passes around the long Hill City team. Hill City also crashed the boards hard and had many offensive and defensive rebounds. The varsity would lose 27 - 73. Owen Hammond had 14 points, Tait Thalheim 10 points, Griffin McKinney 2, and Lucas Hansen 1. Time is on our side as I like to start 4 freshmen. We are getting experience, learning in practice, and making small improvements. It was a very tough and frustrating game, but there is greener grass ahead.
