TREGO POWERLIFTING MEET
March 7, 2026
Coach Cole;
The Huskies traveled to Wakeeney for their first powerlifting meet of the season. There were 4
girls and 10 boys that made the trip on Saturday morning to go compete against 309 other lifters
(75 girls and 234 boys). There were many Husky lifters that said they were nervous for the meet,
but all would do very well in their first real lifting competition setting. The Husky girls team
scored 36 points on the day led by Kylee Ledbetter who placed 3rd in bench, 4th in squat and clean
and overall in her weight class. Andrea Meraz took 5th in bench and 6th
in squat. Kathryn Speer
got 4th in bench, 3rd in squat, 4th in clean, and tied for 4th overall in her weight class. Brooke
Preston had a PR in the bench press with 100 lbs, Andrea Meraz had a PR of 105 lbs in the bench,
and Kylee Ledbetter had a PR of 90 lbs in the clean. Andrea Meraz had the best ratio of the NV
girls at 2.97, which was 27th out of 75 girls. The girls team placed 12th out of 27 teams, and overall
had a great day!
The Husky boys scored 7 points, all by Lucas Hansen. Lucas would bench press 190 lbs for a 6th
place point, and have an incredible 225 lbs clean to get a 3rd place medal. He failed 215 lbs, and
decided to go up to 225 lbs on his last attempt, it worked out. For the boys, Levi Black had a PR in
the clean at 125 lbs, Jeremiah Kirkland had a PR in the bench at 180 lbs, Griffin McKinney
matched his PR of 200 lbs in the clean, Christian McDonald had a PR in the squat at 260 lbs.
Multiple other boys were 5 lbs off of their personal bests, having a successful day. Lucas Hansen
was the only Husky to not get a successful attempt in for the Squat. He was able to squat 275 lbs
and 290 lbs, but both attempts were deemed non-parallel by the judges. After this meet, the
Huskies will be practicing LOWWWWEERR squat depth before the next powerlifting meet!
Lucas Hansen’s ratio of 4.54 put him 52nd out of 234 boys, and Zane Brown’s ratio of 4.07 put him
at 91st out of 234 boys.
I was very happy with all of the athletes effort on a Saturday morning, these meets are fun to go
to, and take a lot of commitment outside of the school week. I appreciate everyone that signed up
and made it to the bus on time! Thanks to Mr. Fes for driving the bus as well

Coach Cole;

The Husky Boys Basketball season ended in the first round of sub-state to a good Dighton team in Almena on Monday. The Huskies lost 43-56, never leading in the game, but would make it close in the fourth quarter. Costly turnovers and lots of missed open looks to score were troublesome for us all night. Shot 27% from the field on the night. The Huskies went 10-12 on the season winning against Triplains/Brewster, Hoxie, Arapahoe, Stockton, Western Plains, Lakeside, and Golden Plains and Logan/Palco each twice. There were many heartbreaking loses in the season… six to be exact. Lost to Weskan by 2, Wheatland by 3, Greeley County by 3, Cheylin by 6, Rawlins County by 7, and Smith Center by 11. All of those games we led in the fourth and couldn’t close them out. Overall the Huskies had a better season than last with the same core group of players. Regular varsity players for the season were Gavin Thalheim, Owen Hammond, Tait Thalheim, Lucas Hansen, Zane Brown, Griffin McKinney, Conner David, and Maverick Rogers. The Husky boys averaged 53.3 PPG, 33.1 RPG, 13.9 APG, 8.5 SPG, 15.7 TO. All statistical improvement from a season ago.

Coach Sides and myself want to thank everyone that supported us all year and traveled to each and every game. The boys worked hard in practice in pursuit of a winning season. Husky boys statistical leaders are below:

Gavin Thalheim led in scoring with 374 (17.0 per game)

Owen Hammond led in rebounding with 234 (10.6 per game)

Owen Hammond led in assists with 78 (3.5 per game)

Gavin Thalheim led in steals with 65 (3.0 per game)

Owen Hammond led in blocks with 12

Gavin Thalheim led in 2-point % at 53% (68/128)

Gavin Thalheim led in 3-point % at 41% (65/157)

Tait Thalheim led in FT% at 70% (57/81)

The Huskies went 5-4 at Home, 2-7 on the Road, 3-1 in Neutral games, and 6-4 in WKLL games.

(Pictured are Jaden Johns and Owen Hammond playing Chess during 7th Hour P.E.)

The Northern Valley 5th Hour Weight Class has participated in a number of double elimination P.E. Game tournaments this year with many more to come. The most recent was the Chess Tournament Championships. With 16 participants in 5th hour Weight Class, it took 4 days to complete the tournament. At the end of the fourth day, the results were as follows:
1st Place - Jaden Johns
2nd Place - Bryson Wilder
3rd Place - Griffin McKinney
4th Place - Aaron Horacek
5th Place - Lucas Hansen
Jaden Johns went undefeated winning 5 chess matches in a row. Bryson Wilder lost his first match to Lucas Hansen, but went on a 6 game winning streak to face Jaden Johns in the championship. Out of 16 students in 5th hour weights, 8 students had never played chess before. All 24 students played Chess during HS P.E. class to take a break from weight lifting, all 24 students can now confidently say they know how to play the game. Too bad there are no local chess tournaments, because quite a few students have great strategy!

The junior varsity boys basketball season ended on Tuesday of last week as they closed the season with a 52-45 victory over the Downs-Lakeside Knights. The Junior Huskies finished the season with 4 - 10 record, and the "C" Team ended with a 0 - 1 record with their only game being against Jetmore "C" Team. The four wins on the season for the JV came against Arapahoe, Thunder Ridge, Stockton, and Lakeside. The JV team went 0 - 5 in league action, as Cheylin and Triplains/Brewster did not have JV teams this year.

14 out of the 18 NVHS players saw junior varsity action this year, as Griffin McKinney, Zane Brown, Conner David, and Maverick Rogers helped out the JV team playing 2 quarters and seeing regular varsity minutes. The Huskies did a good job of learning and running a new 5-Out offense, ran a 2-2-1 press on occasion, Man Defense, 1-3-1 Zone Defense, and 2-3 Defense. They played team basketball to the best of their ability, and worked hard in each and every contest. A lot of players showed tremendous improvement from their previous season played, and every JV player scored a basket!

Conner David led the JV in scoring with 93 (7.2 per game)
Griffin McKinney led the JV in rebounding with 72 (7.2 per game)
Bryson Wilder led the JV in assists with 24 (1.6 per game)
Bryson Wilder led the JV in steals with 26 (1.7 per game)
Zane Brown led the JV in blocks with 20 (1.8 per game)
Bryson Wilder led the JV in turnovers with 72 (5.1 per game)
Bryson Wilder led the JV in fouls with 30
Bryson Wilder led the JV in quarters played (48 out of 48)
Cash Compton led the JV in 2-Point % (50%, 10/20)
Conner David led the JV in 3-Point% (30%, 15/50)
Conner David led the JV in FT % (57%, 4/7)
